Here is a run down of a few of the harmful ingredients in store bought skincare:

SLS, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, SLES, Sodium Laureth Sulfate~Esters of Sulphuric acid, is commonly contaminated with Dioxane, a known carcinogen. This agent causes the massive amounts of lather and cleaning ability at a very cheap cost to the manufacturer. Hence the reason homemade soaps cost more then commercial soaps. SLS causes split ends, swollen skin, rashes, dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, and is not metabolized by the liver, therefore making it’s damaging effects far more dangerous as they stay in our system longer. These chemicals have been banned in Europe because of their harmful effects on humans and wildlife. SLS and SLES kills fish and birds and causes mutations in amphibians. It is in detergents, dish soap, shampoos, bar soaps, body washes, children’s products, sunscreen and is used in commercial lotions to allow micronutrients to permeate the skin faster.-That's scary!

Propylene Glycol aka Petroleum~has serious health problems on the liver and kidney causing damage as well as respiratory irritation or nausea if swallowed. According to Cosmeticsdatabase.com petroleum is considered toxic to organs and is banned in Europe. It is advised to not use this in skincare.

Triclosan~In the United States, 75 percent of liquid soaps and nearly 30 percent of bar soaps are antibacterial. The main ingredient used to make a product antibacterial is triclosan—a chlorophenol compound from a class of chemicals that is suspected of causing cancer in humans. The structure of triclosan is similar to that of some very poisonous chemicals such as dioxins and PCBs, and has been shown to both depress the central nervous system and be hypothermic. The EPA claims triclosan can be a risk to both human health and the environment. Tufts University School of Medicine says triclosan is capable of forcing emergence of ‘super bugs’ it cannot kill.

DMDM Hydantoin & Urea (Imidazolidinyl)~Just two of many preservatives that often release formaldehyde which may cause joint pain, cancer, skin reactions, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness, and loss of sleep. Exposure may irritate the respiratory system, trigger heart palpitations or asthma, aggravate coughs and colds.
Sunscreen Chemicals~Avobenzone, benzphenone, ethoxycinnamate, PABA are commonly used ingredients that are known free radical generators and are believed to damage DNA or lead to cancers. It is becoming more clear that these chemicals are far more worst then the sun's own rays.

These are just a few of the ingredients in the general skincare that we may use everyday. I feel we have enough to worry about these days. We shouldn’t have to worry about slathering ourselves with toxic chemicals.
